Universal Design for Learning

Universal Design for Learning, UDL, is an approach to teaching and learning. To plan a UDL lesson start by determining the goal(s) and then try to remove all barriers for students. It can be difficult to remove all barriers because, according to Cast website, "the way people learn is as unique as their fingerprints."

Using UDL can help overcome this challenge. UDL combines three elements: Representative, Action and Expression, and Engagement. Representing information through multimedias will help make learning accessible for all students. Creating an audio video lesson and using a textbook is an example of introducing content through multimedia. Action and Expression is the way in which students present learning. One student may write an essay while another makes a comic strip and another student is sharing their learning by making a video. Action and Expression also points to the way a teacher responds to the students understanding. Engagements refers to making sure students are interested, paying attention to learning, have choices and are challenged. Through using Universal Design for Learning, teachers are creating genuine learning opportunities for all students. The key takeaway from UDL is flexibility: flexibility in the way students learn and share learning, flexibility in where students learn and flexibility in how you respond to learning.
