Learning to Sew

Updated: Nov 9, 2020

I have a Singer Stylist sewing machine sitting upstairs in my craft room. It was a Christmas present that I asked for three years ago. My mom has used the machine to hem items, create Halloween costumes and clothing. I have used it to sew a straight line with my mom watching. My mom lives three hours away. I do not know how to use the machine on my own. You may be wondering why I wanted this machine and haven’t learned to use it. Well, my intention was to learn to make costumes, curtains and doll clothes but between two little girls, teaching full time and being a wife, learning to sew has gotten pushed to the side. Plus, when your mom offers to help when she visits, why not let her?

As part of my MSU CEP 810 class, we were tasked with learning something new. I figured, why not learn to use the sewing machine. First, I had to clean off my sewing machine. Since Covid-19, it hasn’t been used and things have been piled on it. Then, I researched how to thread my needle and catch the bobbin thread. This was difficult and took me multiple tries. I had to watch the video over and over. Now, I’m reading help forums, looking on social media and using affinity spaces to determine the best way to make a dress for an American Girl Doll. Wish me luck because I’m going to need it!
