Creative Commons

Updated: Nov 20, 2020

What is Creative Commons? I want you to imagine a scenario where you have spent time and energy making a creation; an essay, image, video, etc. You now hold the copyrights to your work and can choose what you want to do with it. You decide to share your work with others. Someone elects to contact you because they think your work is worth using in another context. Prior to using your work, they need to ask your permission. You now have to decide how you would like your work to be used. This is where Creative Commons comes-in to play. Creative Commons allows creators to give permission to others to use their work. Authors of works can decide how they would like their work used and communicate this with interested parties through the license they have picked. There are six different options for licenses that you can use depending on how you would like your work shared. Learn more about Creative Commons at the official website.

I was challenged to make a remix video. A remix video uses other’s works to create something new. I wanted to explain how Creative Commons works using an old cartoon. I found it fairly easy to find works others were willing to share with Creative Commons. The challenge came about with finding a cartoon that would fit with the information I wanted to share. Once I found a cartoon that worked, I set about adding information about Creative Commons and narrating the video. Once I finished making the video I determined how I would like to share using Creative Commons. I set the rights to the remix video so others could use my creation. Now that the Creative Commons license has been set, I can share my video with colleagues and beyond. A colleague or teacher who is trying to teach their students about copyrighting could share my video with their classroom to help explain Creative Commons.
